Reduce Attic Draft Problems

Attic drafts contribute to uneven temperatures, cold spots, high energy bills, and general discomfort throughout the home. These drafts often originate from gaps in the attic floor, poorly sealed ductwork, or uninsulated access points. Reducing attic drafts is essential for maximizing your insulation performance and maintaining comfortable indoor conditions.

Drafts allow conditioned air to escape, reducing efficiency and putting extra strain on HVAC equipment. Attic insulation is a wall or window issue, but the attic is frequently the real culprit.

Why Drafts Occur

Draft formation is influenced by aerodynamics, which explains how air moves through openings and interacts with building structures.

To reduce attic drafts, identify and seal all penetrations in the attic floor. This includes gaps around pipes, wiring, framing joints, and recessed light fixtures. Use expanding foam for larger gaps and caulk for smaller cracks. Then insulate the attic access door with weatherstripping and insulation panels.

Proper insulation depth also helps reduce drafts. Thin or compressed insulation allows cold air to pass through more easily. Adding blown-in insulation across the attic floor creates a thick, consistent barrier that blocks air movement. Combined with air sealing and ventilation adjustments, these improvements eliminate drafts and create a more comfortable indoor environment.
